One seminal study defines the concept longitudinally in terms of religion, the monarchy, the family, the nation, the administration and science. The language policy of the French Revolution is known today especially for the imposition of the national language and the oppression of dialects and regional languages in France. This pilot study focuses on a less-known phenomenon of that period: translation policy. From 1790 on, several decrees stipulated the translation of national laws and decrees into the regional languages of France and some languages of other European countries. The aim of this article is to present the revolutionary events of 1848/1849 in German states from the point of view of Joseph von Eichendorff and Theodor Opitz, which are based on their refl ections, experiences and reactions to this political and breakthrough coup. Eichendorff and Opitz present two different views on the events of the Spring of Nations. These two intellectuals and writers are linked by the last letter from Eichendorff to Theodor Opitz as well as the ideal of freedom, which became their life motto.
